REMI SCHRIJNEN (24-12-1921, died 27-07-2006)

Accidental I became in the possession of the addresse of Remi Schrijnen and I
decided immediately to write him.
Already after a fews days I received news together with several signed pictures
for me and my friend from Remy !
In my letter I asked if it was possible to visit Remy. He was very pleased to
meet us and the next weekend I have visited him together with my friend.
Meeting Remy Schrijnen was a moment I am not going to forget for the rest of my life!
Very happy to meet fellow country men he was most happy to tell us about his
battles on the eastern front.
Remi Schrijnen was born in Kumtich , Flanders on 24 december 1921.
He wanted to enter as a volunteer in the German Army after trying to enter the
Waffen SS and the Gebirgsjäger,
he finally entered in the Legion Flandern as a richtschütze of a Schweren
Pakgeschützes.
Remy received the Iron Cross 2nd Class on 25.5.1944 and shortly thereafter the
Iron Cross 1st Class on 3.8.1944.
He became really fameous, when he hold off a Russian Tank attack and saved the Front
line.
He destroyed 3 Stalin Tanks, the first three that have taken the lead of seven.
For this act of courage and for saving the frontline, he received on 21.9.1944

After the war , Remi Schrijnen was arrested by the Belgian authorities and put
in prison until
1950.
In 1953 they arrested him again and was not released until 1955 .
Remi has left Belgium and still lives together with his wife in Germany.
He died on 27th of july 2006. May he rest in peace.
